NAFPLIO

The magical atmosphere in the center of the old city of Nafplio with its picturesque balconies and narrow Venetian streets will make your stay in Nafplio a unique experience. Since ancient times it has been inhabited and ruled by Byzantines, Franks, Venetians and Turks. The history of Nafplio has a very colorful and varied elegance and it can be seen in its charming buildings. The Venetians were the ones who undoubtedly left their signature on the architecture and layout of the city. They also constructed the imposing fortress of Palamidi, which later on fell into the hands of the Turks. The most glorious moment of Nafplio came in 1821, when Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first leader of the newly liberated Greek Republic, declared the city as the capital of Greece.

BOURTZI

The fortress on the sea, which was named Bourtzi after the Turks (meaning “tower”) and has kept its name since then, became Nafplio’s trademark.
Initially this island, which is located in the middle of the city’s port, was back then a Byzantine church dedicated to St. Theodore. In the center of the fortress there is an inner tower in the shape of an irregular hexagon, with a series of hidden cannons on each side which are situated on the lower levels. Bourtzi can be accessed by the little boats in front of the harbor where all the cafeterias are located. It takes five minutes to get there and they leave every 10 minutes with a cost of 4 €.

PALAMIDI

Palamidi is one of the finest and biggest in size castles in Greece. It is also the best preserved fortress complex made by the Venetians. It follows the natural line of the hill and it harmonizes elegantly with the landscape around it by fully respecting the space and the objective it had been built to serve for. The historical liberation of the town from the Turks started from the Palamidi. However, Palamidi was also a notorious prison. Tradition wanted it to have 1000 steps to reach it by foot, but it is said that Kolokotroni’s horse destroyed the last one counting it down to 999. Nevertheless, it actually has fewer steps (857) and they were constructed in the era of Otto by convicts who were imprisoned in Palamidi.

ΑNCIENT TIRYNS

On the road that links Argos to Nafplio, stands the ancient citadel of Tiryns which was built on a rocky hill. The ancient city of Tiryns was one of the most important Mycenaean cities. It was built by the homonymous hero Tyrin, son of Argos and grandson of Zeus, who, according to mythology constructed the walls with the help of the Cyclops. Its first mythical king was Proetus, Akrisios’ brother who was king of Argos. The ancient city has been preserved and in the archaeological site one can visit the mythical cyclopean walls, the only vaulted tunnels, and the court of the palace decorated with its wonderful representations. The site has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

ANCIENT ASINI – KASTRAKI

Kastraki or otherwise known as the Acropolis of Ancient Assini, is located near Tolo, on a hill-cape of 52 meters height and 330 meters long. From the 5th millennium BC until 600 AD, the citadel was constantly inhabited. However, the first citation of Assini was made by Homer (BC 560), which characteristically informs us that Assini, Argos, Tiryns, Epidaurus and other places in Argolida participated in the Trojan War with a large number of vessels (around eighty ships). The first excavations of the Citadel and the Lower City were made by the Swedish Archaeological Expedition (1922-1930) and it continued in the 1970s by the Hellenic Republic and Ministry of culture together with the Swedish Institute based in Athens.
