The Argolis Artistic School Presents Aeschylus’ The Suppliant Women at Akronafplia
SUPPLIANCE: Touching the sacred soil of Argos, Danaus and his daughters kneel, seeking refuge as suppliants in the land of their ancestors, in order to escape the sons of Aegyptus, who claim them by force.
ROOTS: They seek their roots. In Argos. There, where their lineage finds its primordial thread. For it is from Argos that Io, their ancestress, originated.
RESPONSIBILITY: Pelasgus, king of the land of Argos, wavers between the duty of hospitality and fear of the consequences. He knows that protecting suppliants is a sacred law, binding even upon the powerful. Yet at the same time, he foresees the danger threatening his city should he confront their pursuers. The Egyptians are drawing near.
DEMOCRACY: Pelasgus does not decide alone. He turns to the people, seeking their voice and their will. And so, through a collective decision, Argos assumes responsibility: to protect the Danaids, to stand against injustice. To protect. To care.
ARGOS: Argos is not merely a place; it is a homeland. A homeland that promises not only protection, but also care, concern, and the affirmation of its citizens’ dignity and existence.
DESPERATION: Clinging to the altars of the gods, the Suppliant Women threaten to choose death rather than dishonor if they are denied protection. Their act is a cry of anguish—a dramatic expression of their absolute refusal to submit to a violence that violates both their physical and moral freedom.
The Argolis Artistic School presents Aeschylus’ The Suppliant Women in Nafplio (and not in Argos). With faith in Democracy and in the protection owed by the City, the Homeland, Education, and Culture to young people.
Akronafplia Theatre, Nafplio
Saturday, June 20, 9:00 p.m.
